Glen Raymond Smith
Glen Raymond Smith, 89, of Connersville, passed away Tuesday evening, June 13, 2017 at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis after suffering a stroke on June 6th.
A life-long resident of Connersville, he was born November 12, 1927, the son of John Leslie and Ethel L. Curry Smith. Glen was a 1946 graduate of Connersville High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Purdue University in 1950.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served as a Corporal with the U. S. Army.
For 20 years, he was employed at Philco-Ford and for over 30 years, he was employed at D & M where he held the position of Plant Engineer. He then became the Connersville City Engineer for 16 years, where he was responsible for the planning, supervision and obtaining approval for the Solid Waste Transfer Station Project. He also helped coordinate Indiana Department of Transportation projects throughout the town and coordinated the rehabilitation of 25 homes in Beeson’s Addition from a federal grant that the city was awarded.
On February 14, 1985, he was married in Connersville to Farrell K. Moffett Rieder. For over 20 years they enjoyed wintering in the Fort Myers, Florida area. Mrs. Smith survives.
He was a member of the Faith Assembly of God of Fort Myers and attended the Harrisburg Union Church of Connersville. He was a member of the Connersville Kiwanis Club, Fayette County Purdue Alumni Club and was a member of the Hoosier Power Squadron where he served as Past Commander.
Glen had a life-long love of woodworking, boating, and photography.
Survivors besides his wife are three sons, Duane A. Smith and wife, Sarah, of Carmel, IN, Kerry A. Smith, of Richmond, IN and Todd A. Smith and wife, Barbara, of Hope, Michigan; a step-son, Kris A. Rieder and wife, Rachel, of Richmond, IN, a step-daughter, Leigh Ann Rieder, of Creswell, OR; three grandchildren, Tyler and Kristin Smith and Jennifer Smith; two step-granddaughters, Rebeckah Hester and Jenny Zhan; and two step-great grandchildren, Bryson and Braxton Hester.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Glen’s Life will be held at 4 PM, Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home with Eric Hopkins officiating. Military Rites conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council will take place at the funeral home. Friends may call from 2 PM until the time of the service. Glen’s wish was to be cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Connersville Kiwanis Club.
