Mabel Frances Smith, 92, of Connersville, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Reid Hospital in Richmond.  

One of five children of Herbert and Mildred Johnson Smith, Mabel was born on December 14, 1924 in London, England.  At the age of three, Mabel immigrated to the United States as a passenger on the Cunard White Star ship, Berengaria.

She graduated cum laude from Redford High School in Michigan with the class of 1943 and earned her Associates Degree in business from Michigan State.  During World War II, Mabel worked at Diesels in Detroit, Michigan where she helped produce ship engines for the war effort.

While a student in college, Mabel met her husband, Robert E. Smith, whom she married on February 4, 1950 in the Vestry at St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Redford, Michigan.

Following marriage, they moved to Iowa while Robert attended college and then to Idaho.  In May of 1956, they relocated to Connersville where Mabel was a bookkeeper for Ben Franklin Department Store, starting the year they opened and working until it’s closing.

She was a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Connersville and for a short time, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Richmond.  Mabel was active in the church auxiliary, Tri Kappa Sorority, ADOU Literary Club, Friends of the Library, Home Extension Club and she was an Election Poll Worker.

Besides her husband of over 67 years, Robert E. Smith, survivors include her children, Marsha (Jerry) Knight of Palm Coast, Florida, Christopher Smith of Mount Aukum, California, Phyllis (Lester) Dice of Connersville, Laurence Smith of Connersville; grandchildren, Clay (Elizabeth) Knight, Kathryn Reiter, Natalie and Mallory Smith, Elizabeth (Schuyler) Ging, Blake (Caitlyn) Smith; great-grandchildren, Luke and Margaret Reiter, Elam and Evelyn Knight, Mason Smith and two on the way; siblings, Donald (Betty) Smith of Spring Hill, Florida, Mildred (Charles) Webster of Saline, Michigan, Muriel Carmichael of Battle Creek, Michigan, William (Maureen) Smith of Brighton, Michigan; several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home with Norman Morford officiating.  Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery.
