Nancy Jean “Grandma Nancy J.” Phillips, 75, of Connersville passed away Monday evening, October 30, 2017, at Heritage House of Connersville where she had been a patient for several weeks.

One of two children of Russell E. and Iva A Hadler Dice, Nancy was born on July 27, 1942, in Connersville.

Following High School, Nancy graduated from a secretarial school in Indianapolis in 1960 and started working at Laturno Westinghouse in Indianapolis.  She married James Phillips on February 29, 1964, at East Side United Methodist Church, Connersville.  Nancy returned to college and earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana University in 1985 and her Master of Arts in Education from Ball State University in 1994.  

Nancy worked as a substitute teacher and taught GED and Adult Education courses for Fayette County School Corporation.  She also was an educator for the Head Start program in Brownsville, Indiana for many years.  Nancy was well known among Elementary students for her Little House on the Prairie program she presented to 3rd grade classrooms throughout the county.

A faithful, lifelong member of Eastside United Methodist Church, Nancy served as President of the United Methodist Women, sang in the choir, and was actively involved in the church’s fair tent each year.  She also performed mission work at the United Methodist Red Bird Mission in Kentucky.

Nancy was invested in her community where she helped plant over 200 trees through the "Green Up Connersville" campaign and wrote many articles in the "Way Back Then" section of the Connersville News-Examiner.  For many years, she was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader.

Nancy actively supported her family by helping with 4-H projects and attending family reunions.  In her leisure time, she enjoyed traveling, having visited Israel, the Middle East, and several other countries.  She was also known for her genealogy research, artistic ability, and photography.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, James Phillps; six children,Terri (Kurt) Armbrust of Marion, Indiana, James R. (Heidi) Phillips of South Bend, Indiana, Jeffrey (Sue) Phillips of St. Petersburg, Florida, Scott (Savalia) Phillips of Connersville, Laura (Kyle) Marshall of Dana, Indiana, Todd (Cynthia) Phillips of Somerset, Ohio; sixteen grandchildren;  Elaine and John Marshall, Cody (Meagan) Phillips, Parker Phillips, Carson Phillips, Shelby (Aaron) Schuh, Ryan (Sarah) Hutchinson, Rebekah (John) Woolley, Leah (Eliot) Alderman, Johanna (Michael) Corrao Phillips,  Janeen (Chuck) Hartwig, Caleb (Marley) Phillips, Seth Phillips, Sam Phillips, Joshua Phillips, James Phillips and Cindy Phillips; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin E. Dice of Connersville; two nephews, Mark (Savannah) Dice and Steven Dice, all of Connersville; one niece, Christine Corgill of Hoover, Alabama; and a number of cousins.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law, Sue Dice; and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home.  Reverend Malcolm Greene will officiate.  Burial will follow in Dale Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017, at the funeral home.
