Obituary:
Cecil Thomas Ellis, 91, of Connersville, formally of the Detroit, Michigan area, went to be with his Lord, Feb 19, 2010, in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, where he had been a patient for several weeks. He was born July 6, 1918 in Bumpus Mills, Tennessee, one of three children of Eural D. Ellis and S. Iris Stimson Ellis. As an infant he moved to Detroit, Michigan with his family and later graduated from Northeastern High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and served during World War II as an airplane mechanic stationed in Abilene, Texas. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Michigan for residence. On October 21, 1943, he was married to Virginia R LaBrot, formerly of Flat River, Missouri. Together they raised three children, Beverly, Charles, and Cynthia, and enjoyed the fellowship of their church family, as well as their extended family. His career spanned 27 years as a life insurance agent, and the last 10 years as a social worker for the State of Michigan. Upon retiring and moving to Connersville, he worked for 5 years as a social worker for Area 9 on Aging and then worked for many years as a driver for Landmark Services. As a people person, he particularly enjoyed working with the clients at Landmark. He also served as a ‘lunch lady’ for several years at Eastview Elementary School. He was a member of Gortner Memorial Church of the Nazarene, having served in various capacities in the service of the Lord. The Church of the Nazarene has been the place where he and his family have worshiped since he was 14 years old. Having been very athletic, he played semi-pro ice-hockey, amateur baseball and softball, and golf. Golf became very important to him throughout the years and he held the distinction of being able to shoot his age every year in golf from age 83 to 90. Golf was more than a sport for Cecil, it was a means of fellowship with his family and friends, including a special long time friend, Coy Powell. In addition to his wife, Virginia R. Ellis, he is survived by daughter, Beverly Fleck of Las Vegas, Nevada, son Reverend Charles Ellis and wife Lou Ann, of Charlotte, North Carolina, daughter Cynthia Hopkins and husband Jack, of Connersville; 7 grandchildren: Lawrence Fleck, Joelle Fleck and companion M.
