Albert E. Kunkel, 90, of Connersville passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home where he had been a resident since August 2018.
One of eight children of Albert J. and Clara Overmeyer Kunkel, Albert was born in Connersville on November 21, 1928. He attended St. Gabriel School for eight years and also attended Harrisburg High School.
He worked at Philco-Ford before being drafted into the United States Army on January 12, 1951. Albert served a year in Korea as a Combat Engineer. After receiving his honorable discharge, Albert returned to Connersville and continued working at Philco-Ford until June 1954 when he and his brother Josh opened Kunkel’s Drive-In. Albert retired in 1990 after 37 years.
On August 27, 1955, Albert married the former Bernice Bath in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Harrison, Ohio. Mrs. Kunkel survives.
Albert was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Amvets Post #11, American Legion Post #1, and Knights of Columbus Council #861 where he received the honor of Knight of the Year in 2009. For 20 years, Albert was instrumental in coordinating Chicken at the Fair. He was honored as Distinguished Graduate from St. Gabriel School in 2005. In 2008, Albert and his family received the Family of the Year award from the Knights of Columbus.
In his leisure time, Albert enjoyed bowling with the Knights of Columbus League, playing tennis, and listening to country music. He enjoyed telling jokes and had many published in the Senior Newsletter.
Besides his wife of 63 years, Bernice Kunkel, survivors include four children, Gary E. Kunkel of Indianapolis, Kenneth J. (Tenny Lee) Kunkel of New Palestine, Indiana, Karen K. (Scott) Randall of Fishers, Indiana, Jeffrey A. (Diane) Kunkel of Gilbert, Arizona; three grandchildren, Alison (Ryne) Cooper of Mulberry, Indiana, Katie and Anna Randall of Fishers; two sisters, Helen (Edward) Fasnacht of Wellington, Florida, Alma (Bill) Treece of La Mesa, California; three sisters-in-law, Helen Kunkel of Connersville, Mary Catherine Farmer of West Harrison, Indiana and Edna Weaver of Connersville; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ruth Caldwell, Mary Ann Luerman, and Martha Caldwell; two brothers, Robert Kunkel and John “Josh” Kunkel; sisters-in-law, Alvina Kunkel, and Dolores Lake; brothers-in-law, Carl Luerman, Bill Caldwell, Norbert Farmer, and Jerry Weaver.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend John Luerman at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2019, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Dale Cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2019, followed by visitation until 6:00 p.m. at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home.
