Reverend Don E. Day, 81, of Connersville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, November 8, 2018, at Heritage House of Connersville where he had been a resident since October 1st.
One of fourteen children of Lawrence Arthur and Frances Sheets Day, Don was born on January 16, 1937, in Connersville.
Don served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the USS Saint Paul, the flagship of the 7th fleet. In 1957, along with his shipmates, Don participated in Operation Beacon Hill during the South China Sea Crisis. He received the China Service Gold Medal for his bravery.
On January 18, 1958, Don married Laura Mae Thomas in Los Angeles, California while Don was stationed in Long Beach, California. They resided in the Los Angeles area until moving to Connersville for residence in 1961. His wife, Laura Mae Day, passed away on April 23, 2009.
For several years, he was employed at Connersville Casket Company and worked for many years at D & M until its closing. He then worked at Kemper Cabinets in Richmond until his retirement.
Don was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where he served as a devoted Associate Pastor and Deacon. In his leisure time, he enjoyed walking and visiting the sick.
Survivors include five daughters, Kathy (Greg) Jackson, Chandra Nicholson, all of Connersville, Melinda (Calvin) Williams of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Donna (Jerome) Turner of Oxford, Ohio, and Dana (Brian) Kirtz of Indianapolis; twelve grandchildren, Gregory Jackson, Jr., Tyrone (Keisha) Jackson, Tela Nicholson, Tristan Day, Diara Nicholson, Justin Williams, Jerica Turner, Jeremy Turner, Donzel Williams, Kyera Kirtz, Donovin Kirtz, and Desiree Turner; three great-grandchildren, Brenden Jackson, Ian Jackson, and Madysyn Jackson; three brothers, Marion Day, Eugene N. (Hilda) Day, Paul D. (Eris) Day, all of Connersville; three sisters, Elizabeth (Ray) Williams, Harriett (Bobby) Jackson, all of Connersville, and Myrna Best of Boston, Massachusetts. He is blessed with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his wife of 51 years, Laura Day, Don is preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Maurice Day; a great-grandson, Camden Jackson; six brothers, Lawrence Day, John R. Day, Wallace R. Day, Robert Day, James Day, and Charles “Chuck” Day; and a sister, Georgia Day.
The Homegoing Service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. by Reverend Jerome Weaver on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1501 Indiana Avenue, Connersville, Indiana. Burial with military honors provided by the Fayette County Veterans Council will follow in Dale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2018, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home and at the church on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.
