Robert Everett Smith, 95, of Connersville, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 1, 2019, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home.
The oldest of two sons of Dr. Everett D. and Ethel Valentine Smith, Robert was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 2, 1923. Robert graduated from Romeo High School and served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, earning the rank of Signalman First Class.
Following his honorable discharge, he attended Michigan State University and earned his Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from Iowa State University.
On February 4, 1950, Robert married the former Mabel Frances Smith in Detroit, Michigan and they came to Connersville in 1956. Mrs. Smith passed away on February 5, 2017.
Following his college graduation, Robert was employed at Rogers Seed Company in Idaho Falls, Idaho until he relocated to Connersville where he served as Assistant County Agent until 1961. From there, he took on a role at Central State Bank until 1972 when he began his employment at Bentonville State Bank. In 1985, Robert began driving the Bookmobile for the Fayette County Library, a position he kept until retiring in 2009.
He was a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served on the church vestry. Additionally, Robert is a former member of the Connersville Rotary Club, Jaycees, VFW Post #571, and Civil War Roundtable/Blue & Gray of Dublin. In his leisure time, he enjoyed all things related to the Civil War, gardening, traveling, watching baseball and football, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include four children, Marsha (Jerry) Knight of Palm Coast, Florida, Christopher Smith of Mt. Aukum, California, Phyllis (Lester) Dice of Connersville, and Laurence Smith of Connersville; six grandchildren, Clay (Elizabeth) Knight of Fort Mills, South Carolina, Elizabeth (Skip) Ging of Falmouth, Indiana, Kathryn Reiter of Palm Coast, Florida, Natalie Smith of Los Angeles, California, Mallory Smith of Eureka, California, and Blake Smith of Connersville; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald R. (Arlene) Smith of Joliet, Illinois; several nieces and nephews. Robert is also blessed with several great-nieces and nephews; step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren; and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife of 67 years, Mabel Smith, Robert is preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2019, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home. Burial with military honors provided by the Fayette County Veterans Council will follow in Dale Cemetery.
