Vernon “Vern” Palmer Hopkins, 91, of Connersville passed away Tuesday evening, April 16, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at his home.
Vern was born March 25, 1928, in his Grandma Effie Palmer's home in Seaman, Ohio. He was one of five children born to Vernon Monroe and Dora Myrtle Palmer Hopkins.
Vern graduated from Clarksville High School in 1946 and enlisted in the Army Airforce serving 13 months before his hardship discharge. His parents were involved in an unfortunate car accident and Vern was released from his active military duty to return home to work the family farm.
On October 7, 1967, he married Bonnie Lou Jones. Mrs. Hopkins survives.
After leaving the family farm, Vern started working as a bank teller and after a 29-year career ended up as President of a bank before changing occupations. He bought the Van Wert Insurance Agency in 1977 and operated it until merging with his oldest son in the Hopkins Insurance Agency in 1982. He worked there until his retirement in 1993.
He was a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship and served in all four office positions: Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President, until the Chapter's closing.
Vern was a member of Growing Branches for Christ Ministries where he served as Bookkeeper and Head Usher. His love for Jesus Christ deepened with each added year.
In the spring and summer months, Vern enjoyed working in the yard and in fall and winter, he would read and watch TV in his Arizona Room. He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, was an avid golfer, and especially loved spending time with his family.
He and Bonnie traveled to several countries and took several cruises during his life. He enjoyed God's creation and wanted to take in as much as he could.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Bonnie; six children, Eric Hopkins and wife, Melody of Connersville, Joy Koons and husband, Mike of Connersville, Sheri Chappelow and husband, Will of Laurel, Indiana, Howard Hopkins and wife, Vicky of Connersville, Letecia Foley and husband, Tim of Thornville, Ohio, and Lance Hopkins and wife, Donna of Anderson, Indiana; 19 grandchildren ; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Sanford Hopkins and wife, Shirley of Tucson, AZ; one brother in law, Ronald Jones and wife, Marsha of Lewisburg, Ohio; and several special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings, Denver Hopkins, Beulah Carnahan, and Anna Faye Davisson.
Funeral services will be conducted by Eric Hopkins and Tim Foley at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 22, 2019, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home where friends may call from 10:00 a.m. on Monday until the time of service. Burial with military honors provided by the Fayette County Veterans Council will be in Springersville Cemetery.
